Papal encyclical supporting the WGA and reading and writing [Nov. 19th, 2007|06:02 pm]

Her Loving Ladyship, the newly ordained Pope Elena Romanescu Duverger Ferrick Thompson(http://www.poee.org/living/popes.aspx) has come up with a creative response to the WGA writers' strike:

In support of the Writers' Guild of America's strike for compensation when their work gets streamed on the Internet, sign up here to pledge to read or write yourself instead of watching TV at least one night a week.

Not all Hollywood writers are wealthy and successful - some are "starving artists" who remain unemployed and work second and third jobs between writing gigs. I've personally met some members, actually of the Screenwriters' Guild, and they traveled the country in a trailer performing at poetry slams for extra cash to live on in between gigs - and I'm sure many WGA members are in a similar situation.

Some writers produce content mainly or exclusively intended for the Internet, and the Internet is growing in influence and writers should be compensated for the use of their work.

And - writing/reading on your own will be fun! Whether you produce poetry, a memoir, a novel, short stories, vignettes, even decorated shopping lists - or finally finish that novel you've been meaning to get to someday, you'll open yourself up to new horizons.

This is my sister and my nephew singing. They did it in a studio, of course. Please take a listen, it's amazing. You may have to turn the volume up - it's kind of quiet. Thanks.

HOw wonderful it is to be invited to this virtual party! Margaret Franklin's the name, but I am better known in most LJ circles as beetlebomb!

I am currently volunteering at Kerry's Place autism services and in the process of writing a book about living with Asperger's SYndrome.

I also make dolls and puppets. Most of them are given to underpriveledged kids around the world, usually via our pastor on the mission field through Reapers in the Rain...however, a select grup has been chosen to travel and you can follow their adventures in travellingdolls and more of my creations can be seen at puppetsanddolls and my own website, http://margaretfranklin.netfirms.com

I've also enjoyed singing and songwritng and in 2001 recorded my first and only CD. It may not have made me famous but it was something that God used to bring me and my husband together. It's a story I enjoy telling but I'll save it for later.

I moderate too many communities, go figure. Everytime I get an idea I want to share it becomes another new community. I started my own virtual party about a month ago when I was feeling nostalgic and missing the parties I used to hold at the Blump in allnamestooken. I call it that because everytime I tried to come up for a name for that community all names were tooken. Go figure. Who teeched me to spoke good English. My humour can be pretty corny sometimes. There's a kernel of truth in that statement. Just ask the _ewetopia_ sheep who provided us with nachos in our last post.

Meanwhile, here are a bunch of picures and other goodies I've decided to share with you for the time being. I shall put them behind a cut for now as not to embiggen thy Friiends Page...Read more...Collapse )

We'd love to stay longer but beetlebomb's gotta get out of the kitchen so her hubby can get ready for work! *sigh*

Hi everyone, I'm ladycatherina, your friendly facilitator, and for the purposes of this community, I have a room overlooking the spectacular Northern California coastline :) I'm virtually working as a scientific writer for a cancer research institute that has already made my mother completely well and comfortable, and spend my days interviewing eminent scientists and clinicians over soy lattes, mochas, and frappucinos. On weekends and in the evenings I enjoy strolling through art galleries, performing my poetry and singing in cafes, hiking through beautiful nature trails near my home, stargazing, taking pictures and painting with oil and watercolors, and, of course, surfing!

I'm active on the boards of several science and art museums, and also advocate for microcredit and sustainable national and international development through the Davis-based organization Freedom from Hunger. And I support several monks-in-training through the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India, which I visited during last year's trip around the world for meditation practice. Other highlights of that trip included expatriate literary monuments and backstreets of London and Paris, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the Macchu Picchu ruins in Chile, and a scientific research center in Antarctica. I'm looking for a few traveling companions next year, and my upcoming raise will make it possible for me to subsidize their entire trip, as well as keep up with my substantial investments, in socially responsible funds.

I drive an energy-efficient, hybrid vehicle, and have a perfect driving record, to the point where my insurance company has mentioned that I could get away without even having coverage! But I bicycle and roller-blade whenever possible, as I love to travel and visit friends and family. I have many wonderful friends over here, friends and admiring lovers to whom I have dedicated ballads on my guitar.

I've been attending the Burning Man festival for years, everyone knows me by my restored artwork theme camp, where people drop off old, broken appliances and things from their homes and I re-create them into works of art. It received more visitors after the publication of my second novel, Summer Sunsets, where it was mentioned for the first time.

My parents live nearby, in a lovely oaken treated-wood cabin I bought for them with a single personal check to pay off the mortgage. They've relaxed over the years, especially after I earned my second Ph.D. in neurobiology, and become ready to treat me as an adult and an equal. Although they have no biological grandchildren from me and my current life partners, I do have an adorable niece and nephew in Oregon, the kids of my brother and his wife, who come to visit regularly. And I have an adoptive family from all around the world, whom I encourage to visit also. My online friends all take breaks from their otherwise beautiful lives to come see me here - everyone is always welcome to stay however long they would like, in any of my assortment of guest rooms.

Anyway, in reality, welcome to the community!! I look forward to hearing from all of you, to enjoying many beautiful times together.

If anyone would like to suggest or create an icon for the community, please feel free to do so.
